It is the oldest puppet theater in Belarus. In his repertoire there are memorable, spectacular productions. They attract visitors with fresh, unusual reading of traditional classical and contemporary works, expressive set design, vivid acting, original music, using new types of dolls.

Seventy-year history of the Belarusian State Puppet Theatre – is the way from amateur performances to real art, which has no limits of genre and theme.

In 1938 the first performance “Po Shtchuchyemu Velen’yu” by Elizabeth Tarahovskoya was shown in Gomel. Soon the production “The Oldman and the Crane” by Vitaly Volsky, which has become legendary was introduced. In 1950 the theater moved to Minsk. The main theater director Anatoly Lelyavsky and chief artist Leonid Bykov in addition to children’s plays staged some experimental productions for adult audiences. In 1986 the son of the famous master Aleksey Lelyavsky became the chief director. He continued his creative pursuits of modern art in the puppeteers, that try use all methods and forms of theater in their productions.

The successes of the collective is related to productions of classic works. In particular the performances of the works of Yakub Kolas, Yanka Kupala, Vladimir Mayakovsky, Gerhard Hauptmann, Carlo Gozzi, Mikhail Bulgakov, Mikhail Saltykov-Shchedrin, William Shakespeare, Anton Chekhov.

The State Puppet Theatre of the Republic of Belarus is one of the organizers of the Belarusian international festival of puppet theaters. As part of this unique theater festival, the most interesting productions of both foreign and Belarusian puppet can be seen on the boards of Minsk, you may participate in creative discussions and feel the festival’s atmosphere.

Theater unites both children and adults, living matter – the actor and inanimate – a doll, tradition and experiment. But one thing is certain: each play is permeated with a great love for the arts and dear viewers.

In 2008 according to the decision of the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Belarus, the theater was awarded the title “Honorary team of Belarus.”
